Moriah runner sets section records
Jay Hebert is an All American. The Ticonderoga athlete earned that honor with a sixth place finish in the 60-meter hurdles at the New Balance National Indoor Track & Field Championships in New York City March 16.
New York Mills reaches state title game
The key for rivals of the Moriah Vikings in the 2013-14 boys varsity basketball season was finding a way to stop sophomore Adam Jaquish. All had, for the most part, failed — until New York Mills brought the height and quickness needed to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class D semifinals at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Mills scored a 57-24 win March 14.
The Mineville Miners were crowned the Class B (there were only two classes at the time) state champions March 28, 1930, defeating Margaretville 31-14 in taking top honors.
Meet the members of the 2013-14 Moriah Vikings boys varsity basketball team, which will play New York Mills Friday, March 14, in the NYSPHSAA Class D Final Four at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
For the second time in the last 11 years, the Moriah boys varsity basketball team will head to the Glens Falls Civic Center to play in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s (NYSPHSAA) state championships.
At the end of each of the first three quarters, Adam Jaquish had both outscored and out-rebounded the defending NYSPHSAA Class D state champion Argyle Scots single-handedly.
Alexis Thomas connected on her second three-pointer of the quarter as the buzzer sounded to end the third, pushing the Fort Edward Lady Forts out to a 41-37 lead they would not relinquish in defeating the Section VII/Class D champions, 53-45, March 5.
Jay Hebert brings home the gold
Jay Hebert didn’t run his fastest time at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association indoor track and field championship meet, but he probably ran his best race.
Seton Catholic rallied to beat Ticonderoga in the Section 7 Class C championship game Saturday at the Plattsburgh State Field House. The Sentinels got off to a great first quarter leading 11-7. Seton then rallied to within one point at the half.
Moriah Vikings beat the Westport Eagles to win the Section 7 Class D Championship in boy’s high school basketball Saturday at the Plattsburgh State Field house. After a very slow first start to the game for both teams, Moriah went on a 7-0 run forcing Westport Coach Ike Tyler to call a timeout.
Westport (15-5), trailing 31-29 entering the final eight minutes, scored the first four points of the quarter and went on a 12-3 run that spanned the first six minutes in scoring a 48-41 win Feb. 26.
The Lions used a 13-7 second quarter to extend an early lead to 27-20 at the half and held off a couple of Keene surges in the second half to keep the lead.
As was the case with soccer in Section VII, the Mountain and Valley and Champlain Valley Athletic conferences have gone away in basketball, being replaced with the Northern Basketball League.
